A service rig can be ready to roll at daylight and still lose a full shift before the first jack touches the ground. The usual cause is not the rig. It is a move scheduled before the pad, access road, tanks, permits, fluids, or next operation were actually ready. Knowing how to schedule rig moves means treating the move as part of the workover plan, not as a transportation detail added at the end.
A good schedule protects productive rig time. It gives the service crew a verified location, a travel plan that fits the load, clear site conditions, and a defined handoff from the outgoing operation. It also gives the operator time to correct issues before a rig, winch truck, float, and support equipment are sitting on location waiting.
Start the Rig Move Schedule From the Job Scope
The move date should come from the well plan and scope of work, not simply from the earliest open slot on the rig calendar. A tubing job, pump change, cleanout, workover, or completion support job all carry different equipment needs, crew requirements, and expected duration. Confirm the planned sequence before committing trucks and personnel.
Start with the expected release time from the current location. Ask whether the rig must be broken down completely, whether ancillary equipment will travel separately, and whether the next well has a hard start window. A rig that releases late due to fishing, pressure issues, weather, or additional work can push every truck in the move chain.
Build a realistic transit and rig-up allowance. Short mileage does not always mean a short move. Narrow township roads, soft shoulders, steep entrances, overhead restrictions, gate access, load limits, and site traffic can change the plan quickly. For a Central Ohio move, road conditions after rain can matter as much as distance on the map.
The schedule also needs to account for the operating clock. If the crew arrives late in the day, determine whether there is enough daylight and allowable work time for safe spotting, rig-up, and inspection. It may be better to stage equipment and begin the job cleanly the following morning than force a partial rig-up under poor conditions.
Verify the Next Location Before Dispatching Equipment
A location is not ready because it was ready last week. Confirm readiness close to the move, ideally with a direct field check or a reliable report from the superintendent or foreman who is on site.
The pad must support the rig and all planned support equipment. That includes the service rig, winch truck, fluid units, vacuum truck access, pipe handling area, and any tank or containment layout required for the job. Check for ruts, standing water, unstable fill, snow or ice, drainage issues, and obstructions in the travel path.
Access deserves the same scrutiny. Confirm gates are unlocked, the route is passable for the planned loads, and the entrance allows the necessary turning radius. If the move requires a Rolling Tailboard Float or other specialized hauling configuration, verify that loading and unloading space is available at both ends. A road that works for a pickup may not work for a loaded float or a winch truck positioning a rig component.
Site readiness also includes utilities and production conditions. Confirm power status where applicable, tank and flowline arrangements, pressure control needs, fluid storage, spill-control requirements, and the availability of any operator-furnished materials. If the job requires fresh water, brine, produced-fluid removal, hot oiling, steam cleaning, or vacuum support, put those units on the schedule early rather than calling after the rig is already rigged up.
Coordinate the People, Loads, and Support Units
A rig move is a chain of dependent work. The rig, mast or derrick components, substructure, blocks, tongs, pipe handling equipment, tools, and support units do not always travel on one truck. Every load needs an owner, a dispatch time, a route, and a clear destination.
Assign one move coordinator who can make decisions when conditions change. That person should have the current scope, rig release estimate, truck availability, crew contact information, route details, site access instructions, and the operator’s field contact. Multiple people relaying partial information through calls and texts is how a missing load or wrong-location delivery turns into lost time.
Crew scheduling requires the same discipline. Confirm the service-rig crew, drivers, and any specialized operators are aligned with the move window. Check hours-of-service limitations for drivers and crew fatigue considerations, especially if the current job has run long. A schedule that assumes everyone can work an extra shift may look efficient on paper but create a safety and compliance problem in the field.
For larger jobs, coordinate supporting services in a defined order. Excavation may need to improve the entrance or pad before the move. A vacuum truck may need to clear fluids before the rig arrives. A hot oiler or steamer may be needed after rig-up but before the well can be worked. Engineering or project management support may need to confirm the revised sequence if actual well conditions differ from the original plan.
How to Schedule Rig Moves With a Realistic Critical Path
The critical path is the set of items that can stop the move if they are late. Identify those items first, then work backward from the required rig-up time.
For most moves, the critical path includes the rig release, loadout, road and pad readiness, permits or access approvals, truck availability, crew availability, and the arrival of required support equipment. If any one of those is uncertain, label it as a hold point rather than assuming it will resolve itself.
A practical move plan should establish three check-ins: a planning check 24 to 48 hours ahead, a final readiness check the day before, and a dispatch check immediately before trucks leave. The planning check identifies equipment and route needs. The day-before check confirms that the site is still ready and the preceding operation is still on schedule. The dispatch check verifies actual release time, weather, road condition, and contacts.
Do not schedule every piece of the move to arrive at the same minute. The rig and key rig-up components need priority. Some support equipment can be staged later if it is not needed for initial rig-up, but only if staging does not block access or create congestion on the location. The right sequence depends on pad size, the job scope, and who controls traffic at the site.
Build Contingency Into the Move, Not After It Fails
Weather is a frequent variable, but it is not the only one. Unexpected well conditions, an extended current job, road damage, a failed truck, a permit delay, or a site-access issue can all change the move. The answer is not to pad every schedule blindly. It is to identify the likely failure points and decide the response before they occur.
For example, if rain could make the access road marginal, determine who has authority to call for stone, grading, or site repair. If the current rig job may extend, decide whether the next location can accept a later rig-up or whether a support crew can complete pre-job work while waiting. If fluid handling is likely to be a constraint, reserve vacuum capacity before the tanks are full.
Keep the operator informed early when a move window changes. A short, factual update is more useful than an optimistic promise that cannot be met: rig release moved to late afternoon, road inspection required after rain, or float delayed pending access repair. Field teams can usually adapt when they have accurate information. They cannot recover time from a surprise after trucks are already dispatched.
Document the Handoff Between Jobs
The end of one job should produce the information needed to start the next one. Capture actual rig release time, equipment condition, maintenance needs, missing or damaged items, fuel status, and any transport concerns. If the crew found a problem during breakdown, it is better to correct it at the yard or in transit planning than discover it during rig-up.
At the receiving location, record arrival time, site condition, delays, and the actual rig-up start. This creates useful operating history. After several moves, patterns become clear: a particular route needs more travel allowance, certain pads require advance improvement, or a recurring support service must be scheduled earlier.
