Pad Construction Is About More Than Flat Ground

It also requires a layout that supports the operation without forcing trucks or crews into tight, unworkable positions.
At a drilling or completion location, usable pad space affects every move. Equipment needs room to enter, stage, turn, and leave without creating conflicts. On production and workover sites, placement of tanks, separators, service equipment, and truck approaches determines whether routine maintenance is straightforward or difficult every time a crew arrives.
The field condition matters as much as the drawing. Wet subgrade, shale, soft fill, unexpected rock, and changing weather can all require adjustments. A contractor should be prepared to communicate what the ground is doing, what corrective work is needed, and how that work affects the sequence. Pushing ahead without addressing a weak section usually transfers the problem to the next crew.
Drainage Cannot Be an Afterthought
Water is one of the fastest ways to lose a working surface. Poor drainage can soften roads, pond on pads, erode slopes, damage entrances, and restrict truck movement. It can also turn an otherwise simple maintenance call into a mobilization problem.
Drainage work needs to be integrated with grading, not added after the pad is shaped. Ditches, swales, culverts, sediment-control features, and discharge paths should be established while the contractor has equipment on site. Final grades should move water away from active work areas while maintaining stable slopes and accessible travel lanes.
There is no one drainage detail that fits every lease. The right approach depends on topography, soil, vegetation, drainage outlets, property constraints, and the amount of hard surface or aggregate being installed. What does not change is the need to inspect the result after rain and correct problems before the location is carrying full traffic.
Coordinate Earthwork With Field Services
